5 redfish and cobia caught by 6 people using deep sea jiggling, trolling, heavy tackle, kite fishing, and drift fishing techniques at 679 Beach Blvd

The boat rocks gently. Sunlight dances on the water. A school of redfish appears. Excitement builds. Lures are cast. A redfish strikes. The rod bends. The fish darts left then right. It makes a run for deeper water. The angler holds on. Muscles ache. The fish tires. It's brought alongside. A net is lowered. Success. A beautiful redfish is landed.

Cobia
Species Name: Cobia
Species Family: Rachycentridae
Species Order: Perciformes
Habitat: Onshore, Nearshore, Offshore, Reef, Wreck
Weight: 10 - 80 pounds
Length: 24" - 79"
The cobia, also known as Rachycentron canadum, is a formidable opponent for any angler. As we battled this powerful fish, I couldn't help but marvel at its sleek, torpedo-shaped body and distinctive flat head. The cobia's dark brown coloration, accented by a pronounced lateral line and lighter underbelly, made it stand out against the clear blue waters of the Gulf. Its strength was impressive, making several powerful runs that had our rod bending to its limits. The fight lasted a good 20 minutes, with the cobia showcasing its endurance and agility. When we finally brought it alongside the boat, I was struck by its size - easily over 50 pounds and nearly 5 feet in length. The cobia's large, forked tail and pectoral fins were still pumping with energy, a testament to its fighting spirit. As we carefully lifted it aboard, I couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and respect for this magnificent creature. The cobia's reputation as a prized game fish was well-deserved, and this encounter only reinforced why anglers travel far and wide for a chance to tangle with these impressive predators of the sea.
Redfish
Redfish
Species Name: Redfish
Species Family: Sciaenidae
Species Order: Perciformes
Habitat: Onshore, Flats, Backcountry, Nearshore
Weight: 10 - 45 pounds
Length: 30" - 61"
As we pulled the redfish aboard, I couldn't help but admire its distinctive features. The Sciaenops ocellatus, commonly known as the red drum or redfish, was a sight to behold. Its body gleamed with a beautiful copper-bronze hue, perfectly adapted to blend in with the sandy and grassy bottoms of its coastal habitat. The most striking feature was the large black spot near its tail - a trademark of the species that serves to confuse predators by making it appear larger than it is. This particular specimen was impressive, likely weighing around 30 pounds and stretching nearly 40 inches in length. Its large, powerful tail spoke to its ability to make sudden, strong runs during the fight. The redfish's downturned mouth, perfect for bottom feeding, was still moving as if searching for more prey. Its scales were rough to the touch, a reminder of the fish's durability in its sometimes harsh environment. As we prepared to release this magnificent creature back into the Gulf, I marveled at the redfish's importance not just as a game fish, but as a key player in the coastal ecosystem. The experience of catching and observing this redfish up close was a testament to the thrill and beauty of Gulf Coast fishing.
